The textile industry uses chemicals that are dangerous to human health and wildlife. Many of the chemicals used are acutely toxic, and are classified by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as moderately hazardous to extremely hazardous.

According to the Soil Association, the conventional cotton farmer uses around 150 grams of pesticides to grow the cotton required for one T-shirt – that is the equivalent of one cup of sugar.

Fortunately, organic farmers around the world are showing that there is no need to rely on dangerous chemicals, relying instead on both ancient and innovative growing methods.

Organic cotton is produced without the use of harsh chemicals. Instead natural fertilisers, compost and the use of natural pest control have helped make the growing of organic cotton a viable enterprise. For example, in Uganda black ants keep caterpillars and other pests under control.

In other countries, mixtures of natural soap, chilli and extracts from local trees are used to repel pests, which can then be eaten by chickens or other birds. Insect traps can be used to detect when levels of infestation are rising, allowing farmers to time their applications to gain the best effect.
